Clinical Psychological Assessments

Clinical psychological assessments are often required to investigate the presence, nature...

Clinical psychological assessments are often required to investigate the presence, nature and/or severity of so-called reactive psychological/psychiatric injuries, such as Acute Stress Disorder, PTSD, Adjustment Disorder, other forms of anxiety disorder and different forms of depressive disorder. Claims for such conditions are normally seen as a result of exposure to allegedly traumatic events such as motor vehicle accidents or work-related accidents and other allegedly traumatic work-related experiences and/or circumstances. However, clinical psychological assessments are also often necessary in claims involving reported pain and physical disability in order to evaluate for the potential contribution of psychological and/or motivational factors in the report of pain and physical disability. Furthermore, clinical psychological assessment may be required in order to attempt to differentiate between subject injury related psychological factors and familial, inherent and/or otherwise subject injury unrelated, including pre-existing, psychological and/or personality factors. Also, clinical psychological assessments may be required to assess for psychological/psychiatric factors affecting testamentary capacity, competence to instruct legal representatives, and/or competence to plead in legal proceedings

Clinical psychological assessments involve a detailed clinical interview which covers pre and post-injury aspects of the history, including:

  • Birth and development
  • Familial factors
  • Psychosocial history
  • Medical/injury history unrelated to the subject claim
  • Substance Use History
  • Psychological/psychiatric and neuropsychological history unrelated to the subject claim
  • Occupational history
  • Educational history
  • Medication intake
  • Subject injury history, including a description of events and circumstances said to have resulted in injury
  • Post-subject injury course and treatment
  • Current functioning and ongoing residual symptoms/difficulties

Clinical psychological assessments also includes:

  • psychometric and clinical evaluation of personality and emotional functioning,
  • pain behaviour and self-reported pain induced disability,
  • symptom report validity and performance validity.

Clinical psychological assessments also involve a detailed review of all available documentation, comparison of information from various sources, and integration of this with the history provided by the examinee and the psychometric test data and comments on potential discrepancies and/or the need for clarification.

If appropriate and required, Whole Person Impairment (WPI) ratings can be provided, as well as, if appropriate and required, an opinion with regards to vocational potential (from a psychological and neuropsychological perspective)

Assessment time up to 5 hours (depending on examinee variables and case complexity).

Neuropsychological Assessments

Neuropsychological assessments are often required to investigate the presence, nature...

Neuropsychological assessments are often required to investigate the presence, nature and/or severity of traumatic head/brain injury and other forms of cerebral insult/brain trauma and the effects of such injuries on intellectual, cognitive, learning, behavioural, personality, affective and psychological functioning. These are injury claims normally seen as a result of involvement in motor vehicle accidents, work related accidents, some public liability related injury events and some medical negligence matters. However, neuropsychological assessment may also be called for in cases requiring evaluation of an individual’s testamentary capacity, competence to instruct legal representatives, and competence to plead in legal proceedings.

Neuropsychological assessments involve a detailed clinical interview which covers pre and post-injury aspects of the history, including:

  • Birth and development
  • Familial factors
  • Psychosocial history
  • Medical/injury history unrelated to the subject claim
  • Substance Use History
  • Psychological/psychiatric and neuropsychological history unrelated to the subject claim
  • Occupational history
  • Educational history
  • Medication intake
  • Subject injury history, including a description of injuries
  • Post-subject injury course and treatment
  • Current functioning and ongoing residual symptoms/difficulties

Neuropsychological assessments also involve extensive psychometric and clinical evaluation, including psychometric testing of:

  • Various intellectual, cognitive, memory, information processing and executive functions
  • Literacy
  • Personality/emotional functioning
  • pain behaviour/report and self-reported pain induced disability
  • symptom report validity and performance validity.

Neuropsychological Assessments also involves a detailed review of all available documentation, comparison of information from various sources, and integration of this with the history provided by the examinee and the psychometric test data and comments on potential discrepancies and/or the need for clarification.

If appropriate and required, whole person impairment ratings can also be provided, as well as an opinion with regards to vocational potential (from a psychological and neuropsychological perspective)

Assessment time is up to 7 hours (depending on examinee variables and case complexity). This may involve a combination of clinical psychological (see above) and neuropsychological assessment techniques.

Medication Review

  • claim related
  • not contraindicated with other medicines taken,
  • the correct dose, and
  • being charged to the insurer at a reasonable price,

If there are any other medication options available, the specialist may make recommendations on long-term opioid use/opioid plans.

This report is similar to an IMC, as the specialist will contact the NTD to discuss medication uses; suggest non-addictive alternatives (if required), discuss the necessary use of medications, and long-term planning for medication reductions if at all possible.

An Earning Capacity Assessment, also known as Employability Assessment, reviews and provides recommendations on an individual’s functional ability, vocational skills, transferrable skills, aptitude, interests and work experiences to assess an individual’s current earning capacity. Workplace Mediation

Workplace Mediation is a unique approach to conflict resolution and mediation that combines NLP skills and dispute resolution.

Unresolved workplace conflicts make people unhappy and result in antagonism, communication breakdown, inefficient teams, stress and low productivity.

Workplaces can be a volatile mix of personalities, ages and agendas. Some managers describe dysfunctional teams as trying to manage a schoolyard. Throw into the mix: many individuals are not trained or skilled to resolve conflicts constructively. So instead, an ‘out of sight – out of mind’ approach is implemented, leading to further complications. Tensions escalate until it builds into something explosive or issues simmer and become masked by increasing absences, lack of productivity and low morale.

Conflict can be valuable if managed effectively and constructively. Resolution of disagreements and points of differences can result in:

  • Developing problem solving and decision making expertise
  • Improving interpersonal workplace relationships
  • Increasing productivity and morale

Team Interventions

A Team Intervention involves trained consultants to assist individuals, teams, and organisations in addressing and resolving their workplace issues.

We provide services designed to help businesses recognise and understand the human considerations of a workplace. For example, one aspect of what we do is offer mediation services to those businesses that feel that they are beginning to experience disruptions due to poor workplace morale.

There is a wide variety of contributing factors to any conflict. Sometimes an outside perspective is needed to find your way toward mutually satisfactory outcomes. However, if a dispute has spread team-wide, disrupting the normal collaborative functions of your workplace, this is when organisations may require a team intervention to resolve such issues.

Management Coaching

Management Coaching helps prepare managers to handle complex interpersonal challenges in their roles.

Managers can often be promoted for their technical skills and find themselves unequipped to handle complex interpersonal challenges.

We have worked with team leaders and managers across several industries to develop their potential, including:

  • Developing advanced communication skills
  • Facilitating organisational change
  • Developing advanced conflict resolution skills
  • Creating an environment where others want to work

There are high incidents of interpersonal conflict at work, and Managers and Supervisors need to recognise symptoms of highly dysfunctional conflict as early as possible. Conflict resolution is one of the primary duties of a Manager, and the prompt response to friction keeps any negative aspects of the unresolved conflict from occurring.

Interpersonal conflict can range from minor disagreement to overt hostility. The reason can be substantive (content-based) or emotional (emotion-based) conflict. Effective handling of conflict requires understanding one’s behavioural style and communication orientation and those of other individuals.

Over its 20 years of operation, Active OHS has developed expertise in managing psychological injuries. Our approach reflects the guidelines for the management of work-related stress produced by the South Australian Branch of the AMA in conjunction with Workcover South Australia in 1993.

The guidelines suggested general practitioners not see time off as ‘necessary or usual for psychological injuries’. In fact, it was recommended that work-related stress claims be reviewed if patients have not returned to partial employment within 14 days.

Consequently, Active OHS proposes to our customers using provisional liability to involve us to:

  • Conduct a modified Initial Assessment with a focus on psychosocial factors that include the injured worker’s perception of (the individual) Yellow Flags like a conflict with the supervisor and (organisational) Blue Flags such as lack of control and management style;
  • Facilitate a case conference involving the injured worker, a family representative, the nominated treating doctor and employer;
  • Identify suitable duties and determine an appropriate return to work regime and time frame;
  • Develop an agreed Action Plan within 5 working days from referral.
  • Ideally, referrals are made within 10 working days of the claim being submitted.
